I'm the one on the right!
Hi, my name is Mike Huggins, and I am the owner of Let's Automate Ltd.
Today we turnover approximately £1.5 million, and are the
market leader in the UK for home automation. But let's tell you about us,
and how it all started.
My background is in computer engineering, and I was Service Manager for
Morse Computers for a number of years. I started at Morse just after the
company was started, when there was only a small amount of staff and everyone
had to be able to do a bit of everything - sales, buying, ordering, stock
control, assembling PCs, and even cleaning!
I left Morse Computers in 1991, to start my own company,
Bits'N'PC's which
sells HP, Compaq and Lexmark spare parts, and refurbishes laser printer
fuser assemblies.
Let's Automate started as a hobby.
I started automating my house during 1998 and found that, at the time, there
was very little support available in the UK and Europe for X10 and other home
automation "goodies". After thinking it over for a while I took the plunge,
and set up Let's Automate.
Initialially I only spent an hour a day invoicing, and packing, and then
would travel to my other business, where the goods were actually collected
by the courier.
From the outset it was my intention to offer exceptional service, and a good
stock holding. However I was not prepared for how successful my new "hobby"
was going to be. The hour a day turned into 2, 3, 4 hours a day, and I was
finding it difficult keeping up with both the businesses.
At that point my other business was going well, and I decided to concentrate
on Let's Automate pretty much full time. Whilst this did ease matters for a
while, it didn't take long before I was struggling again. It was at this
point that I luckily had contact from Phil Harris. Phil was not working and
initially offered to help answer support e-mails for me for free! Whilst
this did help, it was not really acceptable for me to use someone's time
without them being paid. Phil started work for me for real about 2 weeks
later in 2002.

Phil stayed with us until the end of 2005, and has now gone onto bigger and
better things
Our stock holding of X10 products, other home automation products and remote
controls is probably the largest of any retailer in Europe. When we buy we
buy in the thousands, and we normally receive new products before anyone
else.
